PROGRAMS
Violence-Against-Women-In-Relationships
This program employs a full-time worker to provide direct service and support to wife assault victims and to facilitate the coordination of relevant community services with the goal to provide a more effective response to incidents of assault of women in the Williams Lake area. In addition, this program provides an educational awareness service for issues and program ideas that relate to the abuse of women.
Assaultive Men's Treatment
This program provides two 18-week group therapy/education sessions each year for men who have been abusive to wives or partners on at least one occasion. The primary purpose of the program is to stop physical, psycholgical, and sexual abuse and violence by using a psycho-educational model.
The therapeutic approach is both confrontational and supportive, seeking to reduce the man's use of denial, minimization and externalization regarding his behaviour and feelings and to provide training in alternative behaviours to enable the participants to form and maintain positive relationships with spouses, partners, children and others.
The program also includes weekly support/education groups for the partners of the participants and other women in the community victimized by a relationship partner.
The Ministry of the Attorney General, Corrections Branch (Probation) is the primary referral source. Self-referrals and referrals from other community professionals are accepted if the circumstances warrant and space permits. (There is a cost for self-referrals, however, these may be reduced dependent on financial means.) Potential participants are screened before acceptance into the program.
